Razz Strategy with CardRunners
By popular demand, Dr. Razz brings you his 10 cardinal rules of Razz play. Using replayed $20/$40 Razz hands as examples, he takes you through the 10 fundamental rules that you MUST know before sitting down at the Razz tables.
As Dr. Razz himself stated in the CardRunners Forums: “Obviously there’s more to being a winning player than just these ten things, but if you use some common poker sense along with them it should help you make the adjustment to razz from other games (like ones without door cards!?!?).”
The game of Razz is gaining popularity and is often found in many Mixed Games formats. In Razz, the worst hand wins the pot and the format follows that of Seven Card Stud high, except that the high card is required to make a forced bet on the first round and the low hand acts first on the remaining streets. Aces are considered the lowest cards, and straights and flushes do not count at all. The absolute best nut hand in Razz is 5-4-3-2-A, normally known as a wheel, which doesn’t count as a straight. An open pair does not affect the betting limit.

Poker argot:
- SIXTH STREET - The sixth card dealt in 7-card stud.
- BURN - To discard the top card of the deck prior to dealing, usually done for every dealing round except the first. The theory being that if somehow the cards are marked (illegally) no one will know what card will next be dealt, only what card will be burned. This makes marked cards less of an advantage, hence tends to reduce cheating.
- GOOD GAME - A game with players worse than you so that you can expect to win a lot of money.
- EDGE - An advantage over an opponent, either specific or subjective.
- LIVE [CARD] - In Stud, a card probably not held by other players.
- ONE-EYED - The jack of hearts, jack of spades or king of diamonds. So named because the characters are drawn in profile, thus showing only one eye.
