April 28th – Daily Deal

Straight ahead on the Daily Deal, we’ll congratulate Full Tilt on the dismissal of two court cases, discuss the debut of CardPlayer TV’s “Under the Gun,” talk about Annette Obrestad’s latest antics, and inform you about WSOP registration changes.

Hello, I’m Sean Gibson and welcome to the Daily Deal by Poker News Daily, brought to you by PokerSource.com.

Full Tilt Poker received positive news in two key court cases in California and Kentucky last week. The Franklin Circuit Court in Kentucky dismissed a “premature discovery” motion, for the simple reason that Tilt’s Irish office had not yet been served with the complaint.

The second decision dismisses the case filed by Lary Kennedy and Greg Omotoy, who claimed that Full Tilt violates the RICO Act. Judge Margaret Morrow of the U.S. District Court determined that the complaint does not meet the definition of a RICO crime.

CardPlayer TV launched its new weekly program “Under the Gun” with host Jon “pokertrip” Friedberg. Sponsored by UB.com, the first episode was filmed on location at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. There, Friedberg talked to two of the top online tournament players, Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi and Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin. The guests discussed the different Player of the Year races and gave their insight on the poker tournament lifestyle.

When we return, we’ll discover what Annette Obrestad is up to and get some sound advice from Harrah’s Seth Palansky on registering for this year’s WSOP Main Event.

In 2007, Norwegian poker superstar Annette Obrestad jumped to fame after winning a tournament on PokerStars without looking at her hole cards. She’ll attempt to repeat this amazing feat at the upcoming Bluff Europe Poker Academy, which will take place at the Victoria Casino in London.

Finally, in a move to balance the field of the two thousand and ten World Series of Poker Main Event, Harrah’s officials told Poker News Daily that Day 2A will feature the survivors of Days 1A and 1C, while Day 2B will feature the survivors of Days 1B and 1D.

Harrah’s Communications Director Seth Palansky cautioned that space on all four starting days of the ten-thousand dollar buy-in feature tournament has been filling up quickly. He added: “If there is a particular day you want, now is the time to make your move.” Palansky added that more players have pre-registered for Day 1D than all three of the other starting days combined.

Oh, and if you haven’t voted for the Tournament of Champions yet, you may want to do so now: Poker News Daily has learned that fewer than one hundred votes separate the twentieth player from the twenty-first “bubble” player. The top 20 will play. Voting remains open until June 15th.

Poker slang:

  • RACE - In tournaments it is sometimes convenient to remove all lower-denomination chips from play, as the remaining players' stacks tend to grow. Small chips are converted to larger chips and any odd chips are "raced off" in the following way: each player with odd chips places them in front of his stack and is dealt one card for each chip. Highest card (rank and suit) takes all the small chips and converts them to higher-denomination chips.
  • TURN - The fourth community card in Hold'em.
  • TO GO - The current betting level, as in "$20 to go" meaning every player must contribute $20 (total) or drop. A $10 raise would then make the pot "$30 to go".
  • LAY ODDS - To give favorable odds to an opponent.
  • ALL-IN - To have all of one's chips in the pot. A player who is all-in cannot be forced out of the pot by more betting, but is only eligible to win that portion of the pot he has contributed to. Generally, a SIDE POT is created each time a player is all-in.
  • DRAWING DEAD - A draw in which it is impossible to obtain a winning hand for any of a variety of reasons: an opponent's hand is better than whatever you are drawing to, the card(s) that make your hand are out of play, or (in Hold'em) give an opponent a stronger hand even if it makes yours. Frequently used in the past tense, since one rarely knows it at the time.
