PokerStars Acquires Three Top Poker Blogs
PokerStars doesn’t seem to be satisfied with its position atop the online poker industry itself, now it also wants to become a “one stop shop” for the best in poker information and blogging.
It was announced earlier this week that PokerStars had acquired three of the top information and blogging sites in the poker community. The three sites – PokerPages.com, PlayWinningPoker.com and Poker-Babes.com – all have longevity in what is a constantly shifting poker universe and each brings different strengths to the table. Addedto PokerStars’ original blog – PokerStarsBlog.com – which offers the latest information from its several tours that encompass the globe, the number one online poker room in the industry has built a portfolio of blogs that offers something for everyone.
PokerPages.com was the original poker news and information site on the internet. Created in 2000, PokerPages.com provided extensive strategy articles, news and interviews for its readership regarding many aspects of the game. One of the most important facets of the site, however, was its extensive tournament results for European and American tournaments dating back to the early days of tournament poker during the 1970s. Prior to its acquisition by PokerStars, however, PokerPages.com had fallen on hard times.
In October 2009, the management of PokerPages shut down operation of the site, although previous information was maintained in the hopes of a buyer for the operation. The site once featured such talented writers as Mike Paulle and Amy Calistri and also was the outlet for players such as T. J. Cloutier, Kenna James and “Hollywood” Dave Stann to write about poker strategy and their lives in the game. With the acquisition by PokerStars, the wealth of information about historical tournaments and strategy should be preserved and perhaps expanded onward.
PlayWinningPoker.com is the offshoot of one of the best selling poker books of all time. “The Winner’s Guide To Online Poker,” written by poker player Steve Badger and published in 2000, was the first book written exclusively for beating the online game. Because of the success of the book, PlayWinningPoker.com was created to discuss many of the differing disciplines of poker and became one of the best outlets for strategy. The site also delved into aspects of the game that many don’t consider, such as poker psychology and bankroll management, giving newcomers to the game a prime outlet for fleshing out their abilities at the tables.
Poker-Babes.com is the creation of poker player Shirley Rosario, who is a well respected online and live player who once worked as a proposition, or “prop,” player at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles. While she maintains that she is a cash game player, Shirley has made a mark on the Los Angeles poker world with top finishes in tournaments across the spectrum of games. Rosario created Poker-Babes.com in 2003 and built up a tremendous resource of information in some of the more offbeat games in poker, including Razz and Badugi. Shirley’s site also provides an excellent lineup of poker player profiles and enhances them with interviews with the players involved.
With the addition of the three poker outlets and the continuation of their own PokerStarsBlog.com, PokerStars has created an all-encompassing poker blogging outlet. The sites complement each other well, as they deal with different aspects of the poker world, and the already significant base of PokerStars should expand even further in the poker industry with the addition of the three new outlets.
