Barry Shulman – Poker Player Profile

A rare combination of businessman, player, and fan, Barry Shulman was made for the poker industry. A tireless student of his craft, Shulman has also served as an ambassador to the game; under his watch, the industry giant Card Player Magazine ushered in the Golden Age of poker and continues to help it thrive.

Barry Shulman was born in Seattle, Washington in 1946, and picked up poker during his time in college in the 1960s. After graduating, Shulman worked in real estate for 25 years before retiring to Las Vegas in the 1990s. In 1999, Barry used his retirement funds to buy Card Player magazine and became its CEO, a position he still holds. CardPlayer has expanded into the European market with CardPlayer Europe and has a number of media partners around the world.

At the poker tables, Shulman has proven himself a very consistent player, with a total of 11 World Series of Poker cashes to his credit. He has one bracelet, which came at the 2001 WSOP in the $1500 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo event and was worth $123K. Barry also has impressive results away from the World Series, including various World Poker Tour final tables, and a recent third place finish at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) for a whopping $1.3 million. Shulman’s biggest poker accomplishment, however, came at the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe, where he bested Daniel Negreanu heads-up to win the event and take down the $1.35 million top prize.

All told, Barry Shulman’s live tournament earnings exceed $4 million. Despite playing an extremely limited schedule in balancing his duties with Card Player, Barry is always a force in any major tournament he decides to play.

Shulman’s son, Jeff, is President of CardPlayer Media and also an accomplished player who made the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event final table, finishing in 5th place for just under $2 million.
