Poker in Twitter: Poker Made Millionaires and Jeff Madsen’s Guitar Lessons

This week, many of your favorite poker players have been on Twitter discussing their recent successes - and disappointments - on the tables, just how many poker millionaires there are, and learning new skills.

J.C. “PrtyPSux” Alvarado has been battling it out in the $200 rebuys online and, while making the final table frequently, the Full Tilt Poker pro seems to be using too many rebuys to make a profit. Alvarado commented in a Tweet earlier this week, “I keep FT’ing that damn $200r and making no money!”

While Alvarado was battling through the tournaments online, other top pros were having success in tournaments across the country. UB.com pro Tiffany Michelle was psyched about the Venetian Deep Stack $500 No Limit tournament on Tuesday when she Tweeted, “In the money and made the final table of today’s $550 Venetian Deep Stack tournament. Comin’ back tomorrow to play it down for about $25k.” Unfortunately for the veteran of “The Amazing Race,” she would bust from the tournament in ninth place, earning slightly over $2,600 for her efforts.

On Wednesday evening, 2007 National Heads-Up Poker Championship winner Paul Wasicka was battling his way through the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit Championship Event in Tunica. After going in with the chip lead at the final table and working his way down to heads-up play, Wasicka Tweeted to his followers, “Heads up for the title. About even in chips, I might have a slight lead.” Wasicka then went on a tremendous run, building up a 5:1 chip advantage and sealing the deal by defeating Larry Gurney. For his work in Tunica, Wasicka earned $139,422, a gold WSOP Circuit ring, and a seat in the 2010 WSOP Main Event.

The L.A. Poker Classic continued its WSOP-like grind and players were letting their Tweeps know what was going on. UB.com pro Adam “Roothlus” Levy was in on the action, Tweeting, “ Going to play the $545 at Commerce with my brother. @MattSavage the structure better be good else I’m tellin’ Chainsaw [Allen Kessler]!” L.A. Poker Classic Tournament Director Matt Savage let Kessler know about the action at the Commerce Casino. “Chainsaw,” known for his prickly demeanor regarding tournament rules, seemed to be relaxing a bit, as he replied, “I may have to cancel my boycott [of the L. A. Poker Classic] then.”

A discussion emerged on the Twitterverse between Full Tilt Poker’s Andy Bloch and 2005 WSOP Circuit champion Doug Lee regarding the number of millionaires in the game of poker. Bloch researched the question and Tweeted, “According to the Hendon Mob site, 601 players have grossed over $1M in tournament poker.” Lee, who sits just under that magic mark with career earnings of $983,000, fired back, “And all but 8 of them are broke.”

While his response to Bloch was especially funny, Lee would also get in on what was potentially the funniest Tweet exchange of the week between UB.com’s Liv Boeree and recent Borgata Winter Poker Open winner Jeff Madsen. After Boeree and Madsen started off the exchange with the latter Tweeting, “I’ve been left to take care of Liv Boeree. God help me,” Boeree fired back, “fold my laundry bitch.”

Boeree, an excellent guitar player, decided to teach Madsen how to play. Apparently the lessons weren’t going well when Boeree Tweeted, “Teaching @jeffmadsenobv to play guitar. Painful doesn’t even describe it.” The aforementioned Lee had the last word on the subject when he Tweeted, “Hey whatever you can do to keep him from rapping again is good by me.”
