TORREY5 Wins UBOC Pot Limit Hold’em Six-Max Event

Event #16 of the ongoing Ultimate Bet Online Championship (UBOC) played out on Friday, with 206 entrants turning out for a $530 Pot Limit Hold’em Six-Max event. When the smoke cleared, UB.com member TORREY5 banked $27,000 for the win.

The top 24 players finished in the money and the tournament just edged out its $100,000 guaranteed prize pool. Heads-up, TORREY5 defeated top-tier tournament player David “DSANDS25” Sands. The latter is the top player in the world according to the PocketFives.com Online Poker Rankings. Last May, Sands emerged victorious in a Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS) event for $259,000 and, to open the month of August, won the challenging PokerStars Sunday 500 for $90,000. Two days after Christmas, Sands took down the PokerStars $215 rebuy for $44,000. In Friday’s UBOC event, the blockbuster online poker player boosted his net worth by $16,000.

Also making the final table of the high-stakes tournament was Brandon “AreTheseUtz” Hall, the reigning champion of the Ultimate Bet Aruba Poker Classic. Hall bested Robert Mizrachi in the October tournament and earned $753,000 in a final table that also featured newly-minted UB.com pro Eric “basebaldy” Baldwin. Hall finished sixth in Friday’s UBOC event and earned $5,400. Here’s a look at the final table paydays in Event #16:

1. TORREY5 - $27,810
2. DSANDS25 - $15,862
3. HAMAZRIYA3 - $12,515
4. 150383 - $9,528
5. WINNERFF - $7,468
6. ARE THESE UTZ - $5,408

Taking place on Thursday was Event #15 of UBOC 4. The $320 Omaha High-Low tournament attracted a field of 331 players, which meant that it fell short of its guarantee. However, 36 players walked away with money, headlined by YOSSARIAN80, who banked an even $25,000. Two UB.com pros also made the final table. Shawn “westtexasman” Rice earned $10,000 for third place, while 11-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet holder Phil Hellmuth took seventh place for $4,200. Rice hails from Lubbock, Texas and was the runner-up in a $2,000 No Limit Hold’em event during the 2004 WSOP for $213,000.

Hellmuth, meanwhile, holds the record for bracelets won and number of “Idiots from Northern Europe” blasts dropped at a poker table. Hellmuth’s last piece of hardware came in 2007, when the UB.com front man took down a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em tournament for $637,000. Hellmuth owns more than $6 million in career WSOP earnings and is one of the most outspoken players on the tour. Here’s how the final table stacked up in UBOC Event #15:

1. YOSSARIAN80 - $25,000
2. GRAPEAPE177 - $15,150
3. SHAWN RICE - $10,500
4. JHENDERSON16 - $7,750
5. CUSHMASTER - $6,500
6. ANGRIFF - $5,250
7. PHILHELLMUTH - $4,250
8. ROTOJUNKIE - $3,250
9. ILOVETSALAD - $2,250

On Sunday, the $1,050 UBOC 4 Championship Event will play out beginning at 4:00pm ET. The tournament was previously listed as a two-day event, but will actually transpire over the course of a single afternoon. The feature tournament has a $1 million guaranteed purse and Hellmuth will serve as its host. Taking place on Saturday on the virtual felts of UBOC is Event #17, a $109 No Limit Hold’em with Rebuys contest. The cards hit the air at 2:00pm ET and at least $100,000 will be up for grabs.

UB.com and its sister site, Absolute Poker, make up the CEREUS Network. The family of rooms happily accepts players from the United States. Besides Hellmuth, Rice, and Baldwin, other UB.com pros include Poker News Daily Guest Columnist Annie Duke, Billy “Patrolman35” Kopp, Brandon Cantu, former “Amazing Race” cast member Tiffany Michelle, Liv Boeree, and Matt “mattg1983” Graham.

Poker terminology:

  • NUT / NUTS - The best possible hand of a given class. Not a LOCK unless all cards have been dealt. The "nut flush" is the highest possible flush, but might still lose to, e.g., a full house. Usually used in Hold'em games.
  • STRAIGHT FLUSH - A hand consisting of 5 cards in sequence and the same suit.
  • RACE - In tournaments it is sometimes convenient to remove all lower-denomination chips from play, as the remaining players' stacks tend to grow. Small chips are converted to larger chips and any odd chips are "raced off" in the following way: each player with odd chips places them in front of his stack and is dealt one card for each chip. Highest card (rank and suit) takes all the small chips and converts them to higher-denomination chips.
  • TELL - Any personal mannerisms that reveal the quality of one's hand. E.g., constantly looking at one's hole cards is often a tell of a poor hand. (Some players, knowing this, will at times check their hole cards when they have a great hand and don't need to look.)
  • THIRD STREET - In Stud, the third card dealt to each player.
  • SUITED - Two or more cards all the same suit. Ant: OFF-SUIT.
