Poker jargon:

  • WIRED [PAIR] - A pair in the hole. In 5-card stud, a door card that pairs the hole card.
  • HOUSE RULE - Rules and interpretations (e.g., use of wild cards, or rules on having to show beaten hands) that are specific to an establishment or even tables within the establishment.
  • RAGS - Board cards that are small, not suited and not in sequence, e.g., 9-5-2. When "rags flop", it is unlikely that anyone has a good hand, except possibly the big blind in an unraised pot.
  • RIVER - The last card dealt in a hand of stud or Hold'em.
  • LATE POSITION - For a particular betting round, a player who does not have to act until most of the other players have acted.
  • SHOWDOWN - The point at the end of the hand where all active players reveal their cards and the pot is awarded to the winner(s).
