Beach officials question plan for poker at Sportsplex
VIRGINIA BEACH Chuck Thornton has held Texas Hold’em poker tournaments at his Hometown Heroes sports pubs for five years. But when he proposed bringing those tournaments to a restaurant he plans to build on city property, the tables turned. Beach officials want to make sure that those games are legal. “I’m not comfortable with the gambling,” Mayor Will Sessoms said.

Poker talk:
- PROP - Also PROPOSITION PLAYER. An employee of the gaming establishment whose primary purpose is to keep enough players at a table to prevent breaking up the game for lack of players. Unlike SHILLs "props" make a small hourly wage but play with their own money, winning or losing based on their skill.
- STACKED [DECK] - A deck that has been arranged to give one player a huge advantage. Also: RIGGED.
- FIXED LIMIT - A betting structure where the amount of each bet is a specific fixed quantity. Usually specified as A-B, where A is the amount to bet in the first few betting rounds and B (larger than A) is the amount bet in the later rounds. Related terms: FLAT LIMIT, NO LIMIT, POT LIMIT, SPREAD LIMIT.
- RERAISE - To raise after an opponent has raised.
- BOAT - A FULL HOUSE, three of a kind and a pair.
- LATE POSITION - For a particular betting round, a player who does not have to act until most of the other players have acted.
