August 4 - Shelley Berkley’s HR 2140 to study the online poker industry will not be dealt with before September as Congress convenes for the summer.

 

Card Player Magazine has conducted research using a global poker tourney tracking system to determine what place has the most successful poker players in the world. The system, the “World Tracker”, found that Denmark is the top spot, with 1.85 medals per million people. The medals are victories in certain qualifying events, such as the World Poker Tour, the World Series of Poker and the European Poker Tour…

News from Poker Players

Last year poker playing Westmoreland, Pennsylvania lawyer, Larry Burns, was charged with organizing a poker game that was busted by the police, and now the state is coming after Burns for some cash. Specifically they are interested in confiscating $40k that they found during the poker event, including over $30k that was donated to the Westmoreland County Fire Department, which was hosting the event. Burns is trying the common defense that poker is a game of skill rather than chance, and as such should be exempt from state gambling law.

The online poker room Paddy Power Poker has launched a promotion to coincide with the Beijing Olympics starting in a few days, the PPP Olympics. Starting the same night as the real Olympics, August 8th, the PPP version will run through the 14th with Holdem and Pot Limit Omaha events running twice a night. Players will have a chance to win money during the entire week, and there will be a big shot with the last event of the PPP Olympics, the $15,000 Gold Medal Freeroll on August 15th, which will feature as part of its prize pool a $4500 prize package to the Irish Winter Festival.
