World Series of Poker’s Main Event Opens
Play opened in the 39th World Series of Poker main event Thursday, with more than 1,000 players putting down $10,000 each in hopes of making it through a 10-hour day of no-limit Texas Hold ‘em.

Poker jargon:
- STAKE - The amount of a player's BUY-IN, or the amount of money they are willing to play with in a given session. Compare: BANKROLL.
- CUT - To break the deck into 2 stacks of at least 5 cards each. Usually performed by the player to the dealer's right to insure that the the deck is not stacked.
- PAT - Holding or being dealt a pat hand. "I'm pat" would mean "I don't want to draw any cards.
- FLOP - [1] In Hold'em, the first three community cards, dealt simultaneously. [2] To deal a flop, or to make a hand on a flop. "I flopped trips".
- UNDER THE GUN - The position that has to act first in a round of betting.
- FLAT LIMIT - A variant of fixed limit where all bets are the same amount.
