World Series of Poker set to begin Thursday
Rounders and dreamers, stars and unknowns — they’re all converging on Las Vegas this week to try to turn a chunk of cash into a huge windfall and earn a permanent spot in poker lore during the world’s biggest card game.

Poker slang:
- PASS - Opposite of bet. To check, if checked to. To fold, if bet to.
- CARDS SPEAK - Winner(s) of the hand are determined by turning their cards face up, the best hand(s) wins (no declaration).
- POSITION - One's location in the betting sequence, relative to the players still in the hand. First position is first to act.
- OPENER - The player who opens the betting, especially in draw poker. A hand may have no openers, in which case it is PASSED OUT, i.e., new hands are dealt.
- HOUSE RULE - Rules and interpretations (e.g., use of wild cards, or rules on having to show beaten hands) that are specific to an establishment or even tables within the establishment.
- READ - To determine whether an opponent has a good, medium or bad hand by observing his personal behavior. An inexact science.
