Layne Flack won first prize, $13k in cash and a seat in the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event, and three charities will split the proceeds from the tournament, which totaled $60k. In Tama, Iowa, poker players who have yet to hit their twenty first birthday won’t be in violation of the law if they are playing poker at the nearby Meskwaki Casino. A plan has been put forth and approved by the Tribal Council to allow players from as young as 18 to play poker on site. Larry Lasley, a spokesman for the tribe, says this is possible because the casino does not provide the prize pool when poker is played: it is generated by the player’s buy ins, and the Tribe will not earn money from these games.
In January, twenty one year old Josh Sommervold was shot and killed during a poker game, and three men will stand trial according to a recent report.
