The debate over whether or not poker is a game of skill versus a game of chance continued when the British Broadcasting Corporation aired a show that took a look at the question from three different points of view. A regulatory authority spokesperson was one, a statistician was the second, and a professional poker player completed the trifecta. In the course of the program the topic was battered back and forth, with even the poker pro admitting that luck does play a role, but that the overall success of a poker player is primarily dependant upon skill.
Australian actor Russell Crowe has come out against poker machines in a club where he is part owner and successfully lobbied for the machines’ recent removal. Together with business partner Peter Holmes a Court, Crowe looked for 60 poker machines to disappear from the South Sydney League Club in Redfern, Sydney. In response to why he cared, Crowe said he was “not moralizing” about poker, but thought that the low income area needed fewer poker machines as opposed to more poker machines…
