While a number of other poker news sources reported that big changes were afoot relative to withholding taxes on tournament winnings of $5,000 and above, a recent IRS press release mostly just clarifies the withholding requirements…

 

MILFORD, N.H. - In this the southern New Hampshire town, the former Violette’s IGA has sat empty for nearly two decades. Now, a company has won Planning Board approval to fill the space with what it calls an ideal match: a poker parlor.

 

BROOMFIELD The 1st Annual Vail Hold Em Poker Event for Your Cause hosted by Mario Lopez, held this past Tuesday, Oct. 16, raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars for a number of very worthy causes.

 

Poker players looking for a contest that celebrates skill over luck should cast an eye towards Ladbrokes Poker, an online poker room that has announced they are going to be paying attention to that sort of thing. A poker game that has longer levels and starts with more chips gives players a chance to use their skills to win the game rather than rely on luck, and that is what Ladbrokes is doing with their LEOCOP III main event. The $750,000 guaranteed tournament has been split to run over two days, giving players a chance to rest up and compete on day two.

The 2007 Australian Open is coming up fast, and 15 people are all set to travel to Melbourne, Australia to take part, thanks to online poker room Titan Poker. The room held tournaments to decide who would go and represent them in this hotly anticipated poker tournament, which will take place from October 24th through the 30th. Winners have their buy in to the event paid, as well as their flight and living arrangements for the duration…

 

In Sweden, the country’s government backed monopoly gambling operator, Svenska Spel, has decided to use the brand “Swedish Poker Championships.” That would be fine except for one thing - the Swedish Poker Association was already using it. The SPA is threatening to sue Spel over the rights, and has retained law firm Liljeblad & Co to issue a warning to the CEO of Spel over trademark violation. To date the two organizations have not come to an agreement on the rights over the name Swedish Poker Championships, even though the SPA sponsored event by that name is set to kick off on November 24.

Starting next year, casinos and other sponsors of poker tournaments will be required to report most winnings to winners and the Internal Revenue Service, according to the IRS.
