Poker Pro on Game Show

Poker players have to have a certain degree of smarts to ply successfully, but are they smarter than a Fifth Grader? That is the question asked by the popular game show with that name, “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” when poker pro Alex “The Outsider” Outhred appeared on the program. When it comes to tournament payouts, Outhred hasn’t done bad, piking up $184,745 at a WPT event, but by going nearly as far as he could on the game show, he picked up $500,000. Alex could have answered one more question for $1 million, but decided to keep the half million he had already earned.

Poker jargon:

  • RERAISE - To raise after an opponent has raised.
  • MISDEAL - A hand dealt incorrectly that must be re-dealt.
  • ACTION - Money that is being bet. "NO ACTION" means a hand or game has few bettors and fewer raisers. "Gimme some action" is ostensibly a plea for calls and raises.
  • TIGHT - [1] A style of play that entails playing fewer hands than average. Antonym: LOOSE. [2] A FULL HOUSE.
  • CHASE - To continue in a hand, often at poor odds, in the hopes of catching a much better hand. "He called, chasing the flush.".
  • RACE - In tournaments it is sometimes convenient to remove all lower-denomination chips from play, as the remaining players' stacks tend to grow. Small chips are converted to larger chips and any odd chips are "raced off" in the following way: each player with odd chips places them in front of his stack and is dealt one card for each chip. Highest card (rank and suit) takes all the small chips and converts them to higher-denomination chips.
