The House Committee for Licensing and Administrative Procedures heard testimony Tuesday to legalize poker games in Texas. House Bill 3186 would legalize gambling on poker games, and the Texas Lottery Commission would provide oversight and age regulations.
A hot game of poker could produce some cold hard cash for Texas.
You may soon be able to play poker for real money in Texas bars and even at charity events. Currently Texas law allows gambling on a card game if it’s done in a private place, but one state representative wants to change all that. We spoke with local bar owners and non-profit organizations to get their take on House Bill 3186, also known as the Poker bill.
One Texas lawmaker says legalizing poker would take an unnecessary strain off law enforcement, and give the people want they want. “I think it’s hypocritical for the state to allow a lottery and allow for bingo halls, which are total gambling games of luck,” said State Rep. Jose Menendez.
An estimated 50 million people in the United States play poker. A bill debated at the State Capitol would make Texas Hold Em wagering legal.
