Modern-day professional poker players bear little resemblance in substance and style to their counterparts from a bygone generation, who stereotypically were gambling men who chose a hard way to make an easy living.

Poker lingo:
- FISH - A player who loses money. An old saying is "If you can't spot the fish at the table, *you* are the fish.".
- FULL OF - Describes a full house. "Fives full of queens" is 5-5-5-Q-Q.
- NICKEL - Five dollars, usually represented by a red casino check.
- FREE CARD - A card dealt after all players checked in a betting round.
- MILES OF BAD ROAD - Three of a kind. Prefixed with a number, 3*<N>, to indicate 3 <N>s. Thus "24 miles of bad road" is 3 eights, etc. (This obviously doesn't work for face cards.)
- BET FOR VALUE - Betting a hand that, in the long run, is expected to win more than it loses. Antonym: BLUFF.
