Parents Wondering About Poker’s Impact on Kids
When poker became so big that the Big Three TV networks began to scramble to come up with offerings to the market, it was a sign that the game had invaded the homes of every day America, and parents are worried now about the impact of poker on the kids. Research points out that anywhere from 60 to 90 percent of young folk participate in gambling of one form or another, often encouraged by parents as an alternate activity to hanging out “in the streets.” Watching the behavior of some teens, however, shows that gambling among teens is often accompanied by drug and alcohol use, so parents are cautioned to take the same care to know what their kids are up to as they would with any other activity.

Poker dictionary:
- STRAIGHT FLUSH - A hand consisting of 5 cards in sequence and the same suit.
- BARN - A FULL HOUSE, three of a kind and a pair.
- BURN - To discard the top card of the deck prior to dealing, usually done for every dealing round except the first. The theory being that if somehow the cards are marked (illegally) no one will know what card will next be dealt, only what card will be burned. This makes marked cards less of an advantage, hence tends to reduce cheating.
- HOYLE - Edmund Hoyle (1769-?) was the authoritative source for rules of card games. Hoyle is to card rules as Webster is to word definitions.
- TO GO - The current betting level, as in "$20 to go" meaning every player must contribute $20 (total) or drop. A $10 raise would then make the pot "$30 to go".
- TURN - The fourth community card in Hold'em.
