Irish online poker powerhouse Paddy Power Poker has been making the news lately, most recently with an April’s Fool joke that became real when they hosted the world’s largest Strip Poker Tournament. Needless to say this garnered plenty of attention, but their interim financial results recently announced for the six months to 30th June 2006 are pretty noteworthy as well. Another smart move by the Irish poker leaders was to act ahead of the intro of tax-free betting by the Irish Government by offering a “tax-free” option of their own…

Useful poker terms:
- UNDER THE GUN - The position that has to act first in a round of betting.
- CHECK RAISE - To check initially, then raise a bet made later on in the same betting round. Frequently a sign of strength, but may be a bluff.
- BRODERICK CRAWFORD - In Hold'em, hole cards of 10-4. From the 1950s TV series "Highway Patrol", starring Broderick Crawford.
- BUTTON CHARGE - A periodic fee paid by whoever is the button, perhaps every 20 minutes or 30 minutes. Constitutes part or all of the HOUSE CUT.
- SEVENTH STREET - The seventh card dealt in 7-card stud.
- OPENER - The player who opens the betting, especially in draw poker. A hand may have no openers, in which case it is PASSED OUT, i.e., new hands are dealt.
