The North Queensland chapter of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club was planning to host a poker run in order to raise money to help the families of veterans, and veterans themselves, but was a bit disappointed by the turnout. Getting dealt a bad hand by the weather, many bikers chose to stay at home this year rather than participate in the poker run, which collected $20 from each participant in order to take part. When World Series of Poker Champion Jamie Gold says he is going to launch a reality show, you might think it would be about poker, and you might think he is bluffing. The former Hollywood talent agent could pull it off, however: not only does he run his own TV production company, but with a prize of $12 million from his win at the 37th annual WSOP, he could practically fund it himself. He could fund it, that is, if he gets the full paycheck - someone claiming he pretends to split the top prize with Gold has filed an injunction against the latest “Ambassador of Poker” to prevent him from cashing in until the matter is settled…

 

The hype eventually got to me. My resistance to the popular card game finally called my bluff. Yes, I’ve jumped on the poker bandwagon, and it’s harder to get off than I thought. It all started on a blistering hot summer afternoon in Phoenix - the kind of day where the air conditioning needs air conditioning.

 

Following the success of the inaugural tournament in 2005, the £500,000 William Hill Poker Grand Prix is fast becoming one of the most prestigious poker events on the circuit. Now aspiring poker players throughout Ireland have a chance to sit down and play with the very best as the Fitzwilliam Card Club in Dublin hosts the third land based qualifier for the Grand Prix II on Friday the 8th September.
