The current state of poker in the state of North Carolina is that it is an illegal gambling activity, but a recent ruling by a Durham judge that locks in poker as a game of chance is being challenged by those who say it is skill, not chance, that defines the game. Howard Fierman, a Durham businessman, is leading the charge, and as a result the case is now at the State Court of Appeals. Should the case establish poker as a game of skill, as Fierman intends, he would then be able to open a poker hall in Durham.

Jamie Dean, a professional online poker player, has been convicted of cannabis possession and the intent to supply it to others. Dean, who had told a jury that he had smoked cannabis from the age of 14, began to grow his own in order to ensure he had access to it, and to control the quality. He bailed pending sentence at Warrington Crown Court after a conviction.
