VISTA —- Talk about beginner’s luck. During his first time ever competing in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, 21 year-old Vista native James “Jimmy” Gorham beat out more than 2,800 other players to win the 1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Tournament.

 

Milwaukee’s Best Light, a new affiliate of the World Series of Poker as their “presenting sponsor” had a surprise in store for the nine players who finished just outside of the money. Those who finished in places from 874 through 882, “on the bubble” as they say, were offered a spot at a special single table winner take all shootout which was played on Saturday, August 5, at 1:30 p.m. In the end it was Sunnyvale, California resident Hoa Man Nguyen who won the entry for next year, saving him $10,000…

 

Mitch Schock, of Bismarck, was eliminated Monday from the World Series of Poker Championship. Schock placed 29th and won $329,865 at the Las Vegas tournament.

 

While the name “Poker Players Alliance” doesn’t strike fear in the hearts of whoever hears it, they are a serious organization that means business. They are a nonprofit organization consisting of American poker players who believe in strength in numbers when it comes to speaking out against attacks on poker, promoting the game of poker, and promoting and protecting online poker players’ rights. The main battle for the Poker Players Alliance right now is HR 4411, a bill that the House of Representatives in the United States voted 317 to 9293 to pass on July 11, which, if it makes it through the Senate, could become law next year…

 

The Big Horn Basin’s “Miles for Mikala” team is pairing with the Burlington Bar in hosting the Big Horn Basin Poker Run and Street Dance Benefit on Saturday as part of its fundraising efforts for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
