Electronic Poker Tables Threaten Dealer Jobs
A North Carolina company, PokerTek, is hoping to strike it big with fully electronic poker tables that eliminate the need of a dealer, or even chips and cards. These Poker tables have been well-received on Indian reservations and in cruise ships, but the question remains whether or not the diehard poker players in Las Vegas are going to be happy playing poker on a computer touch screen rather than on a felt table. According to PokerTek CEO Lou White, there are 50% more hands played per hour at one of the company’s poker pro tables during a Texas Holdem game versus that of a dealer roundtable…

Poker argot:
- CRYING CALL - A call made with little chance of ultimately winning, but marginally better than an immediate fold.
- TOKE - Gambling term for "tip", as in "Toke the cocktail waitress". Comes from the term "Token of appreciation".
- RACE - In tournaments it is sometimes convenient to remove all lower-denomination chips from play, as the remaining players' stacks tend to grow. Small chips are converted to larger chips and any odd chips are "raced off" in the following way: each player with odd chips places them in front of his stack and is dealt one card for each chip. Highest card (rank and suit) takes all the small chips and converts them to higher-denomination chips.
- SEVENTH STREET - The seventh card dealt in 7-card stud.
- DRAW OUT - To catch a card that improves your situation from a losing hand to a winning hand, especially when you beat someone holding a hand that usually figures to win.
- PROP - Also PROPOSITION PLAYER. An employee of the gaming establishment whose primary purpose is to keep enough players at a table to prevent breaking up the game for lack of players. Unlike SHILLs "props" make a small hourly wage but play with their own money, winning or losing based on their skill.
