As afternoon fades into evening, the poker action is continuing in the Amazon Room at the Rio and, as John Gale noted to me, ‘The players are dropping quickly, aren’t they?’….
After six days of nonstop Main Event action at the 37th annual World Series of Poker, the weary poker players who have survived their first and second days get a welcome day off to lick their wounds, get some sleep, fuel, and get ready for the big day on Friday when some 1400 players will take their seats in the Amazon Room and begin the long battle to make it to the final table. For those who have survived this far dreams of the $12 million first prize are probably dancing in their heads, although many would surely be happy to settle for as low as 12 on the prize ladder as the top 12 finishers are all guaranteed at least $1 million.. …
With the final numbers trickling in it appears that the anticipated record-breaking attendance numbers for this year’s World Series of Poker has been exceeded. The talk has been of an estimated 8000 players putting up a $10,000 required to play in the event and it looks like there were more than 8700 that did so for the 37th annual World Series of Poker. Three years ago, when Chris Moneymaker won the Main Event, there were 838 players, a number that tripled the year after, grew to 5619 last year…
