Utahn hopes to break into the poker elite
LAS VEGAS - Hard-driving, adrenaline-pumping rap pounds into Pete Lawson’s headphones, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at him. He hunches over a green felt top table at the 2006 World Series of Poker, a dead look on his face. His eyes dart over his sunglasses, bouncing from one competitor to the next. He watches their faces, hands and ultimately their moves. And then it’s his turn.

Poker terminology:
- DRAW OUT - To catch a card that improves your situation from a losing hand to a winning hand, especially when you beat someone holding a hand that usually figures to win.
- FOUR OF A KIND - A hand containing all four cards of the same rank.
- CHECK RAISE - To check initially, then raise a bet made later on in the same betting round. Frequently a sign of strength, but may be a bluff.
- SEMI-BLUFF - To bluff with a come hand that figures to win if it hits.
- EXPECTATION - The long-run [dis-]advantage of a given situation, specifically without reference to any particular outcome. I.e., what you figure to win [lose] on average after a large number of repetitions of the same situation.
- STUCK - Down a nontrivial amount of money, as in "he's stuck $800".
