Vanessa Selbst almost made history at the World Series of Poker. Instead, she had to settle for a very nice paycheck.Selbst, a 21-year-old from Montclair, finished seventh in a field of 1,919 players last week in the $2,000 No-Limit Hold ‘Em event at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.Selbst, who was third in chips when play began at the final table, quickly moved into second after eliminating former World Champ Carlos Mortenson.Her attempt to become only the 10th woman to win a WSOP

Poker lexicon:
- PAY OFF - Calling a bet with little expectation of winning, unless the opponent is bluffing.
- ROYAL FLUSH - An ace-high straight flush, the best possible hand in regular poker.
- FULL OF - Describes a full house. "Fives full of queens" is 5-5-5-Q-Q.
- COMPUTER HAND - Texas Hold'em hole cards of Q-7 offsuit. More generically, any hand that computer analysis/simulation determines is positive but turns out to be difficult to play in practice.
- OPEN-ENDED STRAIGHT - Four cards to a straight which can be completed by drawing a card at either end. E.g., 6-7-8-9 is an open-ended straight. Also: BOBTAIL STRAIGHT. Compare: INSIDE STRAIGHT.
- CAP - To cap the betting is to make the last permitted raise in a round.
