Jonathan Waessil is short-stacked. In poker, that means everybody else at the table has more chips than you do, but you’re still alive. In life, it means we’re sitting on his sofa in a modest little apartment in a modest little complex near a freeway construction zone in Garden Grove. Useful poker terms:
- STAKE - The amount of a player's BUY-IN, or the amount of money they are willing to play with in a given session. Compare: BANKROLL.
- TRIPS - Three of a kind. In Hold'em the term SET is used when two of the three cards are hole cards.
- COLD CALL - Calling both a bet and raise at the same time, as opposed to calling a bet then later calling a raise made after the call.
- PROP - Also PROPOSITION PLAYER. An employee of the gaming establishment whose primary purpose is to keep enough players at a table to prevent breaking up the game for lack of players. Unlike SHILLs "props" make a small hourly wage but play with their own money, winning or losing based on their skill.
- FACE CARD - A jack, queen or king (a card with a face on it, not joker).
- AMERICAN AIRLINES - In Hold'em, a pair of Aces in the hole. Better known (at least in rec.gambling) as POCKET ROCKETS.
