When parents of young football players and cheerleaders in Marlborough realized they desperately needed cash for equipment this fall, they bypassed bake sales and turned to the latest craze in fundraising: Texas Holdem poker.

 

Betfair is giving a boost to female poker players around the world. The online poker site will be hosting "Ladies Night" women-only freeroll tournaments each Tuesday this month with a total prize pool of £500 (about $872) per event. Over the course of the four freeroll poker tournaments, 30 lucky ladies will also win seats at a live final multi-table event. The woman who emerges the victor in the live poker tournament will get a chance to play against the best female poker players in the world at the 2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP) ladies event in Las Vegas.
