Allison Brauer has figured out how to turn $340 into nearly $15,000. She can play and win at the immensely popular poker game Texas Hold ‘em.The 23-year-old from Milan placed second at the 2006 Jack Binion World Series of Poker No Limit Hold ‘em Ladies Event held Jan. 22 at the Grand Casino in Tunica.Her second-place win and earnings secured her decision to quit her four-year job working in the surgery center at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Poker lingo:
- LOWBALL - Generic term for poker where the lowest hand wins.
- COMPUTER HAND - Texas Hold'em hole cards of Q-7 offsuit. More generically, any hand that computer analysis/simulation determines is positive but turns out to be difficult to play in practice.
- RAKE - Money taken from each pot and given to the house in return for hosting the game. Usually a percentage of the pot (5%-10%) up to some maximum amount.
- BELLY BUSTER - An inside straight draw. Same as GUTSHOT.
- POT LIMIT - A game where the maximum bet is determined by the size of the pot at the time. Note that a player wanting to raise first calls the bet, then totals the pot to determine the maximum amount he can raise.
- FOURTH STREET - In stud poker, the fourth card dealt to each player. Sometimes used to refer to the fourth community card dealt in Hold'em, although the more common term for this is TURN (q.v.).
