North Dakota state representative Jim Kasper might just be online pokers best friend, but it appears that online poker does not return the feeling. Last year Kasper pushed hard to legalize online poker in his state, and had some success in getting the local politicians to see the benefits, which included massive job creation and plenty of tax revenue. Poker terminology:
- HOYLE - Edmund Hoyle (1769-?) was the authoritative source for rules of card games. Hoyle is to card rules as Webster is to word definitions.
- BLACK - When referring to chips, black usually stands for $100 casino chips. "This guy sits down with a stack of blacks and raises the first bet." Not ALL casinos use black for $100 but that is the common usage.
- TOURNAMENT - A highly structured game involving potentially dozens of tables where all participants pay an entry fee and obtain a fixed number of chips. Once a tournament has started, additional players may not enter. As the game progresses players bust out and are eliminated until only one winner remains.
- MARKED CARDS - Cards that have been (illegally) altered so that their value can be read from the back.
- FAMILY POT - A pot where all of the players at the table are participating, even after each has had an opportunity to act.
- FAVORITE - Before all the cards are dealt, a hand that figures to be the winner. Ant: UNDERDOG.
