Judge upholds order allowing Catawbas to operate video poker
A judge upheld his earlier ruling Friday that allows the Catawba Indian Nation to operate video poker on their reservation despite a statewide ban on the games.
Judge Joseph Strickland denied Attorney General Henry McMaster’s request to reconsider his Dec. 13 ruling. McMaster wanted the rehearing, a necessary step before filing for an expedited appeal before the state Supreme Court.
Strickland also accepted additional affidavits in favor of the state’s position. Last month, U.S. Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C., joined McMaster in opposing Strickland’s ruling. Poker dictionary:
- FIXED LIMIT - A betting structure where the amount of each bet is a specific fixed quantity. Usually specified as A-B, where A is the amount to bet in the first few betting rounds and B (larger than A) is the amount bet in the later rounds. Related terms: FLAT LIMIT, NO LIMIT, POT LIMIT, SPREAD LIMIT.
- DRAW - [1] A class of poker games characterized by players being dealt 5 cards face-down and later having the opportunity to replace some of the original 5. "Draw poker" and "Five-card draw" are examples of usage. [2] In stud and Hold'em games, the set of cards that will be dealt later can be collectively called "the draw". [3] To discard some number of cards and have dealt an equal number of replacements.
- HOOK - A Jack. So named because the "J" resembles a hook.
- MANIAC - A player who bets, raises and reraises without regard to the quality of his hand. Most often found in flop games.
- BRODERICK CRAWFORD - In Hold'em, hole cards of 10-4. From the 1950s TV series "Highway Patrol", starring Broderick Crawford.
- CALLER - One who calls. Sometimes used collectively, as in "3 callers".
