Charity poker runs ruled illegal
A recent ruling by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has nixed a popular form of fund-raising by motorcycle enthusiasts called charity “poker runs”.
Poker runs generally include motorcycle riders buying cards at various stops on a route with prizes awarded for the best and sometimes worst hand at the trip’s end.
While the proceeds often go to charitable organizations, Abbott ruled in an opinion filed Dec. 27 that because the events involve an individual paying money for the chance to win a prize, they are essentially gambling and therefore illegal.

Poker lexicon:
- FILL - To draw a card that makes a five-card hand (straight, flush, full house, straight flush).
- JOKER - A 53rd card in the deck, distinct from the others, used as a wild card or as a BUG.
- DEAD MAN'S HAND - Generically: two pair, aces and eights. Specifically: the black aces, black eights and nine of diamonds. The hand Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot to death.
- PAT - Holding or being dealt a pat hand. "I'm pat" would mean "I don't want to draw any cards.
- BIG SLICK - In Texas Hold'em, hole cards of A-K, suited or not.
- COMMUNITY CARDS - Cards that are available for every player to use in making a hand. Usually dealt face up somewhere in the middle of the table.
