If you’re a lawyer, there’s a downside to being known as a poker player. “On the record,” Steve Schlesinger said, “judges will tell me: ‘You said that with a straight face. How do I know you’re not bluffing?’”
Schlesinger started getting those queries after it became known that he won the New England Poker Classic last spring, netting him $60,000 and some minor celebrity. He became the gunslinger to be challenged by aspiring players, the latest of whom was KeySpan chairman Bob Catell.
“I never met the guy before in my life,” Schlesinger said. “He comes up to me at the LIPA hearing and says he wants to play poker with me”…

Poker jargon:
- OPEN-ENDED STRAIGHT - Four cards to a straight which can be completed by drawing a card at either end. E.g., 6-7-8-9 is an open-ended straight. Also: BOBTAIL STRAIGHT. Compare: INSIDE STRAIGHT.
- SHORT-STACKED - Playing with a only a small amount of money, thus limiting one's risk and reward.
- BAD GAME - Any game in which you figure to be the loser, because the other players are better than you.
- FLOP GAME - Any of a number of poker games where a flop is dealt.
- FLUSH - A poker hand consisting of five cards all one suit.
- WHITE BLACKBIRD - A hand so astonishingly rare as to be unworthy of the opponents' consideration, e.g., being dealt a pat royal flush in 5-card draw.
