Good poker players are all eyes, ears at the table
Poker is a game of incomplete information, Howard Lederer is fond of saying. So many unseen cards, so much to be deduced from your opponents’ betting patterns.
So much to be read into their physical look and actions, too.
Which is why the “Professor of Poker” believes you lose out by wearing sunglasses or headphones. With that weapons-grade stare of his, Lederer gives away none of the tells that players wearing sunglasses fear they show.
But he reserves special scorn for players wearing headphones.
“They slow down the action and, on the whole, I believe they hurt the people who use them,” Lederer said. “When a player throws a single, large chip into the pot, he usually announces ‘raise’ or ‘call’…

Poker glossary:
- RING GAME - A standard game where players can come and go as they choose. The opposite of TOURNAMENT.
- RAINBOW - In flop games, a flop in which no two cards are of the same suit. "The flop was A 9 7 rainbow."
- ROLLED UP - In seven-card stud, being dealt three of a kind in the first three cards.
- WORLD SERIES OF POKER - A series of several different poker games with relatively large buy-ins, culminating in a $10,000 buy-in no-limit Hold'em tournament, the winner of which is crowned the World Poker Champion. Sponsored by Binion's Horseshoe Club in Las Vegas.
- BLACK - When referring to chips, black usually stands for $100 casino chips. "This guy sits down with a stack of blacks and raises the first bet." Not ALL casinos use black for $100 but that is the common usage.
- FLOP GAME - Any of a number of poker games where a flop is dealt.
