Poker Runs Ruled Illegal in Texas
While not exactly “poker,” the popular “poker run” has become a more and more popular off-shoot of the current poker boom. Unfortunately for participants and the charities the runs usually benefit, the Texas Attorney General has deemed them illegal.
A poker run is a contest in which participants pay an entry fee, like in a poker tournament, and drive around collecting playing cards from different places. The people who finish the run with the best hands…

Useful poker information:
- DEAD MAN'S HAND - Generically: two pair, aces and eights. Specifically: the black aces, black eights and nine of diamonds. The hand Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot to death.
- BUTTON CHARGE - A periodic fee paid by whoever is the button, perhaps every 20 minutes or 30 minutes. Constitutes part or all of the HOUSE CUT.
- PAY OFF - Calling a bet with little expectation of winning, unless the opponent is bluffing.
- FULL HOUSE - A hand consisting of 3-of-a-kind and a (different) pair.
- BLACK - When referring to chips, black usually stands for $100 casino chips. "This guy sits down with a stack of blacks and raises the first bet." Not ALL casinos use black for $100 but that is the common usage.
- OVERPAIR - In Hold'em, a pair in the hole that is larger than any community card on the board.
