Keep poker players in, then fold them
You are dealt pocket 4s. You raise because you are hoping to eliminate the many hands with overcards that can beat you. At least that’s what many poker books and many big-name professionals tell you to do.
But not Phil Gordon.
With pocket pairs, especially small ones, you just want to call because you have the chance to make a lot of money if the field is bigger, said the author of “Phil Gordon’s Little Green Book.”

Useful poker information:
- FREE CARD - A card dealt after all players checked in a betting round.
- READ - To determine whether an opponent has a good, medium or bad hand by observing his personal behavior. An inexact science.
- PAT HAND - In draw poker, a hand that does not need any more cards. Specifically, a straight, flush, full house or straight flush. One might bluff and represent a pat hand but actually hold something else.
- WHITE BLACKBIRD - A hand so astonishingly rare as to be unworthy of the opponents' consideration, e.g., being dealt a pat royal flush in 5-card draw.
- RIDER BACK (TM) - A brand of playing cards that feature a bicycle rider on the back of the cards. Often used in home games. Compare: BEE No. 92.
- ONE-EYED - The jack of hearts, jack of spades or king of diamonds. So named because the characters are drawn in profile, thus showing only one eye.
