Video poker bars force racinos to refocus marketing
When gamblers started choosing tiny video poker bars over the 3,200 slots and more plush accommodations at Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort, President Ted Arneault searched for a new idea to lure them back.
Then he settled on an old one: Collectibles.
In November, Arneault boosted Mountaineer’s business 5 percent over the same period last year, largely by offering slot players the chance to collect a different piece of limited-edition Fiesta tableware on every visit.
Fiesta ware is made by Homer Laughlin China Co., whose factory sits just a few miles north of the track in Newell. The company made 10,000 pieces for Mountaineer in cinnabar, a deep red shade introduced in 2004…

Poker glossary:
- BRODERICK CRAWFORD - In Hold'em, hole cards of 10-4. From the 1950s TV series "Highway Patrol", starring Broderick Crawford.
- REBUY - [1] To purchase additional chips after an initial buy-in, usually after losing most or all of the previous buy-in. This term is most often used in certain tournaments where if one loses all one's chips, or falls below a certain minimum chip level, for an additional sum of money one can purchase a fixed amount of additional tournament chips. Usually there is a time limit (The "REBUY PERIOD") as to how long rebuys are allowed. [2] The additional chips "rebought" in tournament play.
- BARN - A FULL HOUSE, three of a kind and a pair.
- SPLIT [THE POT] - To split the pot between two or more players. Related term: QUARTER.
- SIDE POT - When an active player runs out of money during the course of a hand, the remaining players participate in a second or SIDE POT for the rest of the hand. Additional side pots are possible if several players run out of money at different points in a hand.
- CARDS SPEAK - Winner(s) of the hand are determined by turning their cards face up, the best hand(s) wins (no declaration).
