Tribe Check Raises Judge In Video Poker Ruling
Just when it seemed a local tribe would win a battle in the ongoing war against video poker in South Carolina, they have made an offer that seems to have taken the state by surprise.
The Catawba Indians of Rock Hill sued the state in July when they said they should be allowed to operate video poker machines on their reservation due to an agreement that predated the states outlawing of the game, which came about in 2000. A judge ruled this past Tuesday that they indeed had the right to begin operating video poker, but a spokesperson for the tribe said they were willing to waive that right, in exchange for something else.
The Catawba Indians want to open a bingo parlor in the Santee community, something they tried to do last year but that was blocked by the courts. The tribe feels the bingo parlor would be of benefit to both the tribe and the Santee community, and so is willing to swap….
