MATTHEWS-BASED DUO BET ON ELECTRONIC CARD TABLE: Who needs poker dealer?

Lou White and James Crawford are countin’ their money while they’re sittin’ at the table.

Aiming to cash in on poker’s renewed popularity, two years ago the Charlotte duo created - in White’s basement - an electronic poker table. They say it saves casinos and players money. Their company, PokerTek Inc., now in an office center in Matthews, went public in October, raising about $22 million.

  • TOURNAMENT - A highly structured game involving potentially dozens of tables where all participants pay an entry fee and obtain a fixed number of chips. Once a tournament has started, additional players may not enter. As the game progresses players bust out and are eliminated until only one winner remains.
  • HIGH-LOW SPLIT - Forms of poker in which the pot is split between the best hand and best lowball hand.
  • MARKED CARDS - Cards that have been (illegally) altered so that their value can be read from the back.
  • OPENERS - Cards in a hand that qualify a player to open the betting.
  • STAND OFF - To call a raise. "Opener raises, I stand off".
  • STEAM - Playing wildly, calling and raising a lot, because one is upset. Compare: ON TILT.
