Poker Can Be an Addiction or a Character Builder
I’m over 60 years old. Three years ago when I walked into a local poker room, I knew most of the players. Their average age was probably forty-something and three or four kinds of poker were being played throughout the room.
Today when I walk into the room I don’t recognize anybody. Most of the faces are younger than my own kids and only one game is usually being played – Texas Hold’em.
I’m mentioning this because of some recent articles in the newspapers about young people who have become harmfully addicted to poker…

Poker lexicon:
- PAY OFF - Calling a bet with little expectation of winning, unless the opponent is bluffing.
- FLOORMAN - The casino representative in charge of the card room or a section of a card room. Arbitrates disputes when unusual events happen.
- REPRESENT - Implying, by one's betting style, that one has a particular hand.
- MILES OF BAD ROAD - Three of a kind. Prefixed with a number, 3*<N>, to indicate 3 <N>s. Thus "24 miles of bad road" is 3 eights, etc. (This obviously doesn't work for face cards.)
- LITTLE SLICK - In Hold'em, hole cards of A-2, suited or not.
- FAVORITE - Before all the cards are dealt, a hand that figures to be the winner. Ant: UNDERDOG.
