Preflop Loose, Postflop Tight
The low buy in no limit hold’em cash games of Southern California and elsewhere have become a happy hunting ground for aggressive players who have noticed and noted a certain flaw in their foes. I’m talking about the tendency to play too loose before the flop and too tight afterwards. If you fall victim to this tendency, you’re giving your money away. If you know how to spot it and exploit it, you can absolutely crush these games.
Here’s how it works. A player looks down at a hand like Q-9 suited and figures that if a couple of people limp in front of him, he’ll limp, too. Well, a couple of people do limp, but then someone puts in a modest raise. He still has the same Q-9 suited — it was a folding hand to begin with and it’s definitely a folding hand now — but since he’s loose, and since he had already decided to call an unraised bet, he goes ahead and calls the raised one just the same. Useful poker information:
- JOKER - A 53rd card in the deck, distinct from the others, used as a wild card or as a BUG.
- MUCK - [1] A collection of face-down cards near the dealer composed of discards, i.e., folded hands, burns and discards for drawing purposes. [2] To throw one's cards into the muck, thus folding.
- WHEEL - A-2-3-4-5. Usually discussed in the context of lowball where it is the best possible hand. Can also refer to a 5-high straight in high games. Also: BICYCLE.
- ON TILT - Playing worse (usually, more aggressively) than usual because a player has become emotionally upset.
- FLUSH - A poker hand consisting of five cards all one suit.
- FIXED LIMIT - A betting structure where the amount of each bet is a specific fixed quantity. Usually specified as A-B, where A is the amount to bet in the first few betting rounds and B (larger than A) is the amount bet in the later rounds. Related terms: FLAT LIMIT, NO LIMIT, POT LIMIT, SPREAD LIMIT.
