The Oklahoma Johnny Hale Open Poker Tournament
Carol, once again we are driving from Las Vegas, Nevada to Tulsa, Oklahoma. We are traveling down old route 66-”The main street of America”-but now they call It I-40.
We are traveling back to Tulsa, Oklahoma-remember the song?-”Take me back to Tulsa?”-to make arrangements for my # 78 birthday poker party.
I remember the first time I traveled on “The main street of America.” It was when I was about ten years old riding down old route 66. The Hale family was on its way to the land of milk and honey-California!
John Steinbeck, wrote about this in his best seller—”The Grapes of Wrath” The Hale family was not in the book-nor in the movie-but we lived through it and we did make the trip from Oklahoma to California-but we came by way of Las Vegas. Times were a little tough back in Oklahoma. Dad owned a little-nowdays you would call it a 7/11-with groceries and gas. Bread was two loaves for eight cents, and gas was nine cents a gallon.

Poker lingo:
- TRIP - Three of a specific kind, as in "Trip sixes".
- PAT HAND - In draw poker, a hand that does not need any more cards. Specifically, a straight, flush, full house or straight flush. One might bluff and represent a pat hand but actually hold something else.
- BIG BOBTAIL - An open-ended 4-card straight flush.
- TAP - In no-limit games, to wager all of one's money in one bet.
- BLUFF - To make a bet or raise with a poor hand, in hope that the remaining active player(s) will fold.
- WHITE BLACKBIRD - A hand so astonishingly rare as to be unworthy of the opponents' consideration, e.g., being dealt a pat royal flush in 5-card draw.
