Poker Cop: T is for Tell
Honey’s not talking about the House of Cards. Her bodyguard, “Big Elmo,” lays sprawled, half-in and half-out of the front door of “The Girls,” Honey’s Strip Club/Poker Room. What’s left of Honey herself is splattered all over her front steps.
Neither is Thumbs.
The City Morgue’s “Meat Wagon” is parked in the alley behind “The Cat Flush Card Club.” Thumbs lays under two white sheets ten feet apart.
Or Wheels. The Limp Inn has burned to the ground. The twisted remains of a melted wheelchair, and its charred-beyond-recognition owner, sit in the ruins. “We’re too late,” says Jake. “All the injured House of Cards players are dead.”
“Yes,” I say.
“No,” says The Ugly Man as he comes up behind me and slashes at my throat.
I don’t feel the knife make its shallow cut through my flesh - must be the pain killers.Jake aims his shotgun . . .

- NICKEL - Five dollars, usually represented by a red casino check.

- SHOWDOWN - The point at the end of the hand where all active players reveal their cards and the pot is awarded to the winner(s).
- TOP TWO PAIR - In flop games, having hole cards that make the highest possible two pair hand.
- QUARTER - [1] Twenty-five dollars, often symbolized by a green casino chip. [2] To divide half a pot between two tying hands. In split pot games, a player who "ties" another player for their half of the pot is said to be "quartered". One might say "I didn't bet my A-2 because I figured I'd get quartered".
- FIFTH STREET - In stud poker, the fifth card to be dealt to each player. Sometimes used to refer to the last card dealt in Hold'em, although the more common term for this is RIVER (q.v.).
