Hold’em Japan Part 3: A Joe and Hobby Fiction
We came to Japan to play poker; so far it’s been anything but. We were rudely introduced to Japan’s underworld, but survived an altercation which led to an invitation to visit Iwatasan, the number one mob chieftain. Our host Sugi Yamamoto, scored points with the big man and won assurance we’d be troubled no more. Hobby and I were ready to flee the enclave and return to Tokyo before anyone had a change of mind. “Mr. Iwata asked us to stay for dinner and overnight,” Sugi said.
I looked at Hobby who gave a subtle “no” nod and I answered, “Thanks, but we would rather go back to Tokyo.”
“It would be unwise to refuse,” Sugi said with grave seriousness.
“In that case,” Hobby replied, “we graciously accept.”

Useful poker information:
- ONE-EYED - The jack of hearts, jack of spades or king of diamonds. So named because the characters are drawn in profile, thus showing only one eye.
- TAP - In no-limit games, to wager all of one's money in one bet.
- QUARTER - [1] Twenty-five dollars, often symbolized by a green casino chip. [2] To divide half a pot between two tying hands. In split pot games, a player who "ties" another player for their half of the pot is said to be "quartered". One might say "I didn't bet my A-2 because I figured I'd get quartered".
- DEALER'S CHOICE - In home games, a rule that permits the dealer to name which poker game to be played that hand. Often limited to selecting from a list provided.
- TURN - The fourth community card in Hold'em.
- RACE - In tournaments it is sometimes convenient to remove all lower-denomination chips from play, as the remaining players' stacks tend to grow. Small chips are converted to larger chips and any odd chips are "raced off" in the following way: each player with odd chips places them in front of his stack and is dealt one card for each chip. Highest card (rank and suit) takes all the small chips and converts them to higher-denomination chips.
