Poker, Eh? Tomorrow Marks the Beginning of the Largest Poker Tournament in Canadian History

The biggest poker tournament in Canadian history is scheduled to begin tomorrow in Richmond, British Columbia, at the River Rock Casino. Not limited to Canadian nationals, up to 1,500 poker players from all over North America will gather to pit their skills against one another in three different Texas Hold ‘em disciplines, pot limit, limit, and no-limit, with a maximum of 500 players per tournament.

Useful poker terms:

  • STAND OFF - To call a raise. "Opener raises, I stand off".
  • OMAHA - A variant of Hold'em where each player receives 4 hole cards and must use exactly two of them (together with 3 of 5 board cards) to make a hand. Often played high-low split with an 8 qualifier for low.
  • POSSIBLE [STRAIGHT/FLUSH] - Up cards that quite possibly could lead to a straight and/or a flush.
  • STRAIGHT - A hand consisting of 5 cards in sequence but not in suit.
  • QUALIFIER - A minimum standard that a hand must meet in order to win. Usually applied to the lowball side of a high-low split pot.
  • EDGE - An advantage over an opponent, either specific or subjective.
