Omaha H/L: Choosing a Table and Seat
Today we resume our discussion on poker decisions. If you are like most players you have decided which game and what limit you want to play before even entering a poker room. Most players do not consider table selection or seat selection. Although this discussion is geared toward brick and mortar poker rooms, the concepts may be applied to the Internet as well.
Those who play in limited small local casinos, which spread only one table of your preferred game, and stake, may only have a limited choice unless there is another casino nearby. Table selection may mean different things for different people. The average outgoing tourist may prefer a friendly game where everyone is courteous and willing to engage in conversation. They may not want to sit at a table with a loud drunk, with someone who raises the pot every hand or one where almost every hand results in a conflict or criticism. Poker glossary:
- MUCK - [1] A collection of face-down cards near the dealer composed of discards, i.e., folded hands, burns and discards for drawing purposes. [2] To throw one's cards into the muck, thus folding.
- FLOP GAME - Any of a number of poker games where a flop is dealt.
- FREEROLL - [1] A poker tournament that does not charge a buy-in fee; players must earn buy-in credits through previous play at the same establishment. [2] Having a lock on part of a pot (sure to win a greater fraction of the pot than one is betting) and playing to win more or all of it.
- TOKE - Gambling term for "tip", as in "Toke the cocktail waitress". Comes from the term "Token of appreciation".
- LEAK - To show one's hole cards (often unknowingly).
- FILL - To draw a card that makes a five-card hand (straight, flush, full house, straight flush).
