Embracing Bad Beats…
Today let’s discuss everyone’s favorite subject, Bad Beats. I make that statement with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek. As you read the title of this column you may well have concluded that Leonard has truly lost it! I can almost hear the groans…”Embracing Bad Beats”…and you’re thinking, “How can I embrace something I despise?” Well, hear me out as to why you should really be embracing bad beats and welcoming them to your game.
A bad beat occurs when an opponent’s hand, that is a significant underdog to yours, “catches lucky” and winds up being the winner much to your chagrin. Now granted, that stings but you should begin to embrace this unpleasant occurrence. Why? Let me take you through an example to demonstrate my thesis. Useful poker terms:
- BIG BOBTAIL - An open-ended 4-card straight flush.
- FLAT LIMIT - A variant of fixed limit where all bets are the same amount.
- HOYLE - Edmund Hoyle (1769-?) was the authoritative source for rules of card games. Hoyle is to card rules as Webster is to word definitions.
- ALL-IN - To have all of one's chips in the pot. A player who is all-in cannot be forced out of the pot by more betting, but is only eligible to win that portion of the pot he has contributed to. Generally, a SIDE POT is created each time a player is all-in.
- WHITE BLACKBIRD - A hand so astonishingly rare as to be unworthy of the opponents' consideration, e.g., being dealt a pat royal flush in 5-card draw.
- QUALIFIER - A minimum standard that a hand must meet in order to win. Usually applied to the lowball side of a high-low split pot.
