Embracing Bad Beats…
Today let’s discuss everyone’s favorite subject, Bad Beats. I make that statement with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek. As you read the title of this column you may well have concluded that Leonard has truly lost it! I can almost hear the groans…”Embracing Bad Beats”…and you’re thinking, “How can I embrace something I despise?” Well, hear me out as to why you should really be embracing bad beats and welcoming them to your game.
A bad beat occurs when an opponent’s hand, that is a significant underdog to yours, “catches lucky” and winds up being the winner much to your chagrin. Now granted, that stings but you should begin to embrace this unpleasant occurrence. Why? Let me take you through an example to demonstrate my thesis. Poker talk:
- CHECK RAISE - To check initially, then raise a bet made later on in the same betting round. Frequently a sign of strength, but may be a bluff.
- CAP - To cap the betting is to make the last permitted raise in a round.
- LAY ODDS - To give favorable odds to an opponent.
- ANTE - A small bet all players are required to make before a hand is dealt. Not all games have an ante. Related terms: BLIND, FORCED BET.
- CUT - To break the deck into 2 stacks of at least 5 cards each. Usually performed by the player to the dealer's right to insure that the the deck is not stacked.
- POCKET ROCKETS - In Hold'em, a pair of aces for hole cards.
